AS A source of both entertainment and income, Rangers' friendly engagement with AC Milan was an unequivocal success last night. A remarkable attendance of over 45,000 were attracted to Govan for the visit of the seven-times European champions and they did not leave disappointed.
Four goals, all of them in a second half which did not feature David Beckham who was replaced at the interval, were shared by two teams enjoying a break from serious business. It amounted to good business for Rangers who will have made a six-figure profit from the exercise in their well-publicised times of financial problems. As part of their commitment to this fixture, it seemed Milan had included a clause which prevented any serious form of tackling. The disclaimer would seek to protect their biggest names from suffering any setbacks which might see them miss any of a Serie A title pursuit behind their city rivals and reigning Italian champions Inter.
The lack of a genuinely competitive edge did not seem to trouble the supporters who had been tempted out on a wintry night, although the message did not get through to everyone.Youthful naivete could perhaps be used in John Fleck's defence when he left Felipe Mattioni crumpled in a heap with an uncompromising challenge in the opening minutes, but the 17-year-old Rangers prodigy incurred Milan's wrath nonetheless.Coach Carlo Ancelotti rushed to the edge of his technical area to glare at Fleck, while the youngster was also reproached by Beckham. Fleck's contrition towards Mattioni was genuine and accepted, however. While the Rangers fans had principally come to see Beckham, Ronaldinho & Co in the flesh, they would have been gratified to see their own team thrive in a non-pressurised situation as they produced some attractive passing football.
Pedro Mendes, partnered in central midfield by the fit again Maurice Edu as captain Barry Ferguson began the evening among the substitutes, was prominent in much of their eye-catching work and saw a powerful 20-yard shot deflected narrowly wide.Edu, understandably keener than most to make an impression after such a frustrating start to his Rangers career, found Fleck in space on the left with a neat pass, the young forward's terrific first touch then allowing him to wrongfoot Philippe Senderos and float in a cross which Kyle Lafferty should have done better with than head over from close range. While Milan were some way short of fully exerting themselves, they delivered enough of the kind of skill the big crowd had paid to see.
They should have opened the scoring in the 16th minute when Ronaldinho's brilliant ball over the top played in Filippo Inzaghi, but the supreme poacher did not connect properly as Allan McGregor was able to make a smothering save.Fleck's self confidence among such elevated company was another indication of his rich promise and his precisely delivered corner from the right picked out Lee McCulloch whose thumping header was well saved by Milan goalkeeper Dida. McGregor was a mere spectator at the other end when, from Milan's first set-piece opportunity, Ronaldinho curled in a trademark effort which struck the helpless Rangers' keeper's right-hand post.Fleck should have seized a moment to treasure when played in by Mendes in Rangers' next attack, but struck his low shot too close to Dida.
With Andriy Shevchenko cutting an anonymous figure, while Beckham flitted in and out of proceedings, Ronaldinho continued to the focal point of Milan's best moments. He picked out Inzaghi again with another sublime pass but the striker was foiled once more by McGregor.Beckham was among those who did not reappear for the second half. For the Rangers fans, the raft of substitutions represented rare sightings of Christian Dailly, DaMarcus Beasley and Andrius Velicka. The changes made by Milan, introducing Clarence Seedorf and Kaka among others, simply emphasised the gulf in resources.
When Seedorf curled a delicious effort narrowly off target, it seemed as if the visitors were poised to emphasise their superiority but it was one of Rangers' understudies who made the breakthrough.Beasley, a member of the PSV Eindhoven side controversially beaten by Milan in the 2005 Champions League semi-finals, savoured the moment as he pounced on an error from Matteo Darmian then shrugged off Andrea Pirlo's challenge before driving a precise low shot with the outside of his left boot beyond Dida into the corner. The lead lasted just five minutes, however, as a calamitous mix-up in the Rangers defence gifted Milan their equaliser. In attempting to cut out a Kaka cross, Dailly merely succeeded in striking the ball against team-mate Steven Whittaker.
The ball rebounded to Alexandre Pato and the young Brazilian stroked it home from close range.Rangers' substitute goalkeeper Neil Alexander then saved brilliantly from Inzaghi, but was helpless to prevent Kaka putting Milan 2-1 in front with 12 minutes remaining with a sweetly struck right-foot shot from the edge of the penalty area after latching onto Seedorf's pass. The home side were not prepared to accept even honourable defeat, however, and levelled in the 83rd minute through an unlikely source when Sasa Papac surged forward and finished off a fine pass from Aaron Niguez in admirably composed fashion.
Rangers: McGregor (Alexander 46), Whittaker, Bougherra (Dailly 46), Weir (Broadfoot 46), Papac; McCulloch (Boyd 81); Naismith, Edu (Davis 75), Mendes (Ferguson 46), Fleck (Beasley 46); Lafferty (Velicka 46). Subs not used: Miller, Niguez, Davis.
AC Milan: Dida, Mattioni (Jankulovski 61), Silva, Senderos (Darmian 46), Antonini (Albertazzi 75); Beckham (Seedorf 46), Flamini (Cardacio 61), Pirlo; Ronaldinho (Kaka 61), Inzaghi, Shevchenko (Pato 68). Subs not used: Donnarumma, Strasser.

I know Carletto would not favor the 3 defenders formation, just like i said 4 defenders is better to ensure solid defense. But once in a while changing tactics can improve the players themselves, thanks Acu totally miss last nite match.Gonna catch the delay match, but its a friendly nothing serious.Nice to see the youngsters names playing..
Vit great formation suggestion,we need to explore all kind of tactics but for me i still wanted us to play with 2 strikers..
Miss the match completely, they said it will be air at 5.30 a.m but i woke up and there's Napoli vs Juventus
Vit,i can see where u are going with that formation,we need penetration from the midfields and having 2 attacking midfielders can certainly change thing.
Its unacceptable,we drew with Rangers?? we should have spank them in their butt..
Hekhekhek..
spank them in their butt?hehe..
Rangers have pace..
We dont..
Vit...
i agree we should play with 4 defenders bcoz Zambrotta needs to play and today there's a rumors about Luis Suarez from Ajax is being watch by milan or perhaps they have finalise the transfer...
i dont have any idea about that...and i know for sure that we have not sign Marco Rossi...
We need to axe the old legs and thank god to the youth that have bring the new breath to our style and most importantly pace..
All good youth we have is being introduce last nite and luckyly they didn't do bad at all...
the saddest thing for me is the Sheva's form..
Seedorf is bullshit i dont wanna talk about that...
We need our players to enjoy themself and the youngsters is doing just that last night, great to see them click with the oldies..
they dont do bad..
but it wasn't great too...
still a long way before they can become pato...
thats why i insist in buying worldclass youngsters...
like...well u guys know who...hahahaha...
Acu i know who we should buy....
BENZEMA
DIEGO...etc...hahaha...
fuck berlusconi...
The match last night was good for our youngsters. It's okay that we only drew. It's only a friendly and everyone got to play which is good. Yes T. Silva, Mattioni, and Darmian made mistakes that led to the Rangers goals but please consider the bright side. They were playing TOGETHER as a team of old and new just like Hell Me said.
Friendlies are just to "bleed in" new players and to exercise the bench warmers. Becks did horrible in his first friendly with us in Dubai against Hamburg. But look at him now!
they did good. not brilliant. but a passing grade.
thanks to everyone who read about my proposed 4-2-3-1 formation in the last blog.
DonCarloVito: I also tried to implement a way to play two strikers up front. But looking at Pato and Inzaghi (the only two who can still score..it's sad to see Sheva unable to score and Borriello's injured) they work best or developed into lone strikers with ball support from attacking midfielders. I agree it would be nice to play 2 strikers. But with the 3 attacking midfield + 1 striker it's like we have 3-4 strikers if we're on attack. We all know that Kaka, Ronaldinho, and even Gourcuff are creative enough to make plays and attack along with Pato/Inzaghi.
Remember how Machester United won everything last season using Ferguson's 4-6-0 strikerless formation. ManU don't play a TRUE 4-4-2 C.Ronaldo, Giggs, Rooney, and Tevez all drop back deep in the midfield.. but when they attack it's like having 1 attacking midfield (Giggs) plus 3 strikers (CR7, Rooney, and Tevez). It shows just how important having a "connection" with your teamates is. we can do almost the same thing with Gourcuff as "Giggs" and the Ka-Pa-Ro strikeforce in the 4-2-3-1.
4-6-0 is for the english league where there's emphasis on dynamics, physical play, and the long ball. 4-2-3-1 is better for Ancelotti and Serie A as the emphasis is on tactics, play build-up and passing.
For OUR SQUAD/PLAYERS, and for ANCELOTTI's STYLE, i believe that the 4-2-3-1 will create the OPTIMUM BALANCE. It's like having an Italian style defense 4-2 + a Brazilian style attack 3-1..the two most successful World Cup winning countries! hehehe
TheTrot: i agree we need more width and penetration from the midfield w/o sacrificing defensive strength. we actually would have 3 attacking midfielders playing plus 1 striker if we use that formation..hehehe
Mohd: I know you like Benzema and Diego very very very very much. but Pato is our Benzema..they are starting to play very similar as they idolize Ronaldo99 both. Pato is also younger and has potential left still. Also Diego will interfere with Ronaldinho + Kaka.. we need to get rid of Ronnie or Ricky if you want Diego. and everyone knows Ronnie and Ricky are far better than Diego. Ricky's faster and stronger and more physical and Ronnie's far more creative than Diego.
Suarez.. again he plays like Pato! don't need him and we have a Suarez.. he's called Paloschi and he's waiting for his chance. If we were to find a striker then we need an Inzaghi replacement. a young kid who can play like and is even stronger than Inzaghi. that way if Pato's style isn't working we have a new Inzaghi.
Another Rumor is that Henry will be sold by Barca this summer. If we know Galliani (he loves old stars!) he might try to buy him. But to be honest Henry would work well (if he's cheap price..Benzema's too expensive when we already have our Pato) in the 4-2-3-1 if Pato is injured/suspended/needs rest.
Hahaha....trot and vit...
i just like those players...
but i insist on we buying Diego before ronnie came to san siro...hahaha...but since ronnie came we have got the creativity but he got bench in recent time and look what we are going trough rite now its disasteres to see seedorf playing for us...
But Pato is still very in a learning proses...
like i said in previous post Pato's weakness is he's sometime tend to shoot before the time, his first and second touch of the ball needs desperate improvement,he is still very baby and not fully mature yet but he does have talent and skills that will mature through out his career in the future...
Vit...
i think we need Suarez's expertise as the leftback...this is what Carletto have demand but it comes late as the transfer window have closes...if suarez come he will be the roberto carlos of milan and jankulovski can play at the midfield...
stupid for us to make late move...
he is classy and wont cost us much...
i agree with u Vit...
as much as i hate man.u...
they have superb attacks and defend...
vidic is the best in the world...
ronaldo is the best in the world...
they put teves and rooney upfront and they produce very wierd successfull partnership....
but right now i think barca is the best not man.u...
imagine if barca and man.u meet in the final of UCL???
huhu...amazing for the neuteral like us...
I heard Nesta's injury just get worst..Gosh..
really trot??
we dont have to follow Man utd style because we are Milan and like u said Acu..we play like true itallian club, nothing flashy but efective enough to wim games..
Acu can I suggest a new topic??
please Zambro..
What will happen to Milan next season??
what post we will accomplish??
who will become our best players??
who will become our worst players??
can we win The Champ.League??
Etc...
I will create new post Zambro....
